Mouth Guards – Imperative in any sport

You may be surprised to hear that it can also help protect against neck injuries and head injuries as well. This is a final result of the mouth guard is acting as a barrier and cushions the impact of jarring to the face.

Mouth pieces are a must if you are participating in sports like soccer, boxing, basketball, football, lacrosse, gymnastics, bicycling, and even tennis. In any activity that requires active contact with the players, sporting equipment, or otherwise are energetic; the risk of facial injury is increased. Let’s face it, it’s frequently better to be safe, than sorry!

Mouth pieces should fit well and feel comfortable in the mouth. In essence, who would want to wear something that does not stay in place or that creates friction lesions on the delicate  tissue in your mouth?

There are multiple options to think about when buying a mouth guard. You can purchase the boil and mold mouth guard, which is a flexible substance to create a mold for your teeth when heated up. While these do give some grade of protection, if you do not follow the instructions precisely they will not adhere right.

Then you have the standardized mouth guards that are pre made and probably are the cheapest choice, but you must be satisfied with a fractional quantity of protection. These usually do not fit as well and can rub lesions inside of your mouth.

The final option is getting a customized fit mouth guard created by your dental practitioner. While these are a little more expensive, they are absolutely worth the added cost. They offer the best possible protection, as they are fitted to your teeth. The better the fit, the snugger the feel, and the easier it is to play, breath, and use the guard.

Here is fast fact: ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿Current research has shown that facial injuries are more likely  in soccer and basketball than football or hockey. ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿ï»¿We realize that this sounds a bit far fetched?  After all, football and hockey are so much faster paced and more energetic. But, one thing to consider is that while they are more violent, the players wear more protection.  Soccer and basketball leave the players completely open. So be safe, talk to your dentist about getting a mouth guard fitting. Consider that, your simple Mouth guard isn’t just for looks, it’s yours for life!
